A Good Love Story
When we were utterly helpless, with no way of escape, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners who had no use for him . . . But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. – Romans 5:6, 8 (TLB)
Everyone loves a good love story. More than 45 years ago, there was even a bestselling book and popular movie with that title (if you’re too young to remember, ask your grandparents about it). Through the years there have been many films with a love story as their basis, from the classics, African Queen and My Fair Lady, to more recent titles like Runaway Bride and My Big Fat Greek Wedding (and this year, the sequel).
At the heart of all these love stories is the idea that opposites attract: rich boy and poor girl, or cultured woman and grease-monkey guy, or famous movie star and unknown, humble working person. The romance, the differing understandings of life, and the sparks that fly when people from vastly different backgrounds come together make for fascinating films and healthy ticket sales.
Yet, there is a much better love story, one that has lasted throughout the ages. When your ancestors were lost, confused, and wandering around, I sent My Son to die for them. The good part of the story is that He’s still alive. Still available for you when you believe in Him as the way to eternal life. Because I sent My Son for you, don’t believe those who try to tell you that My love is anything but unchanging and eternal. You can’t earn it. Just accept it.
