Keeping Your Promises
God cannot tell lies! And so his promises and vows are two things that can never be changed. We have run to God for safety. Now his promises should greatly encourage us to take hold of the hope that is right in front of us. – Hebrews 6:18 (CEV)
Hebrews says My word is like gold. Seem hard to find that in a world where promises are routinely broken? America just came through an election where it seemed impossible to keep up with the exaggerations, distortions and political “spin.” The unpleasant truth is it isn’t just leaders who lie. The behavior of people at the top of the food chain simply reflect what is occurring at the bottom.
It’s too easy to expect someone else to be a person of integrity, an example of forthrightness, a promise keeper.
Why not start with yourself? There aren’t that many others you can direct or influence, but you have all kinds of ability to be the one who serves as a role model for your family and friends. To be a person who follows Me, reads my Word, and teaches others about its unchanging truths.
Anyone who seeks to be My faithful follower will face scoffers, doubters, skeptics and naysayers. They will sneer, “Why bother? What’s the use? Nothing will ever change.” That’s when you will need to summon the courage to remain faithful to Me when it seems like you’re all alone. Take heart in My presence and My faithfulness. After all, when you reach the end of your life, you will be the only one who can write your epitaph.
Catalyst for Spiritual Growth
- Elijah, a noted spiritual leader in Israel, wound up hiding in a cave even though he had just defeated 400 followers of the false god, Baal. While Elijah thought he was all alone, God told him there were 7,000 others just like him. Have you ever felt like Elijah when facing a powerful foe? What encouragement can you draw from this passage?
