Make A Difference (Be Different)
Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. – Ephesians 4:32 (NIV)
So many people are looking for the wrong things when they help others. While volunteering to help at the soup kitchen, or in the community garden, or reading to a classroom they seem to be motivated by the kudos they get from their friends after posting the pictures of their service. They share their experiences to get a pat on the back, to look good, to feel better about themselves.
True service is done with humility. It doesn’t need to be recognized, rewarded, or put into the spotlight. It doesn’t seek out a hashtag, or @ mention, or selfie.
The Bible puts it this way, “Be especially careful when you are trying to be good so that you don’t make a performance out of it. It might be good theater, but the God who made you won’t be applauding.” (Matthew 6:1 The Message)
Kindness and compassion too, they should be done, not for the social buzz or for the viral effect they can generate, but because the world needs people who are kind and compassionate. The world needs people who selflessly do for others. People who are loving.
Next time you have the opportunity to be kind, DO IT! Don’t worry about looking good, or what others will think about it. Hold the door open for someone, give a compliment, pick up that piece of trash from the sidewalk, put an extra change in a meter that is about to run out, call someone who may be lonely, smile. There are hundreds of ways you can be kind and loving.
I want my followers to make a difference in this world, you can best do that by living differently, which is why I want you to be faithful, loving and humble.
