Paying Your Debt

The Christmas story is unbelievable.

Paying Your Debt

But when the time was right, God sent his Son, and a woman gave birth to him. His Son obeyed the Law, so he could set us free from the Law, and we could become God’s children. – Galatians 4:4-5 (CEV)

Ever been hounded by a debt collection agency? You know the drill. Constant calls on your cell phone—even at work. Threats of dire consequences if you fail to pay, including violence. Abusive or profane language. Attempts to make you pay more than you owe. The irony is that after all the December charge card bills are added up, you may find yourself in the same situation again.

How sad that the celebration of my Son’s birth would be marred by lingering problems with debt. Yet there is something more serious than intimidating bill collectors—Satan trying to persuade you that you can pay off your debt when it comes to eternal matters. The story of Christmas is how my Son came to set people free from keeping the Law, better known as the Ten Commandments. They were my original rules for living a better life.

The trouble is, no one could keep them. That’s why My Son came.

He made the sacrifice for everyone’s mistakes, wrongdoing, wrong motives, envy, lust and other misdeeds, all wrapped up in the word, “sin.” Believing in Him as the Son of God cancels the penalty of eternal death. Those who receive this gift will spend eternity with us in heaven. That is good news, the kind that deserves a celebration!
