Taking Hold of the Eternal
Always be joyful and never stop praying. Whatever happens, keep thanking God because of Jesus Christ. This is what God wants you to do. – 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (CEV)
The turkey and dressing have been reduced to leftovers—and if you went to Grandma’s house for Thanksgiving, you may not even have those. The next few weeks will be a blur of shopping, Christmas parties, gift wrapping and merry-making . . . and then what? What will you have to show for all that enjoyment, except five extra pounds come January 1?
The best gift you could ever hope to receive during this season will be to discover the joy of a grateful heart. Throughout this week you have considered qualities like thankfulness, gratitude, praise and contentment. These are traits you can’t buy at the nearest big box store, discount outlet or lifestyle center. They never go on sale and yet their value is long-lasting—even eternal.
In life, it’s so easy to lapse into grumbling, complaining, criticism and fault-finding. After all, negativity is a natural human impulse. To overcome it, you need the joy of knowing you face an eternity with Me and My Son. Once you have settled that issue, you will be free to enjoy My blessings. It won’t be easy.
It calls for looking for the good while most people around you look for the bad. It means having courage while others yield to fear. It means marching into the future with confidence instead of trembling amid life’s uncertainties. With Me by your side, you will be able to take hold of the eternal that will last for a lifetime.
