The Joy of Following God

The Joy of Following God

Followers. Everyone seems to crave them. The more you have, the more important you are. Movie stars collect them by the millions. People get worried if they don’t get enough. You can even pay online sites to attract more—although you have to wonder how valuable such followers are.

Perhaps this social media obsession is one reason people are more stressed than ever. Surveys say young people—who have less responsibility than adults—are more stressed out. One found a third of teens feel overwhelmed, depressed, or tired because of stress. Nearly a fourth say they’ve skipped meals because of it.

What about you? Are you spending ever-increasing amounts of time trying to compete for others’ attention? To show how important you are? To demonstrate that what you say matters to lots of people?

The truth is, focusing too much effort on self-glorification leads to more problems than pleasures. This habit is the direct opposite of the advice Jesus gave to people when he lived on this earth.

In John 12:16, Jesus said that those who follow him will be ready to serve at a moment’s notice. And serving others, that is, not themselves. Those who do will find honor and rewards from God.

Jesus said things like this constantly. On another occasion, he said, “Whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever among you would be greatest must be servant of all. For even the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:43-45 MEV).

So, the choice is yours. Try to call attention to yourself and create pressure and unhappiness…or serve others and discover the joy of following God.

A Challenge For You

Check online for the names of three social service agencies or community organizations in your area that could benefit from your assistance. Call each one in the next week to discuss ways you can be of help. Then follow through and start volunteering for one of them.
