Your real gift isn’t under the tree
Gifts. Presents. Packages in the mail. Who doesn’t love them? Big or small, frivolous or practical, expensive or thrifty, gifts warm the heart and bring a smile to the face. Why? Because gifts make us feel valued. They say we are thought of and cared for. They say we are special. God sent you a gift. The most extravagant gift ever: His Son.
Jesus Is Your Real Gift
Don’t you love it when you open a gift, and as you unpack it, it turns out to be even better than you imagined? When there’s something inside that catches you by surprise, that makes your eyes pop and your breath catch? That’s what God’s gift to us is like. The most remarkable gift ever given didn’t come with fancy wrappings or a big bow. But as you begin to unwrap the gift of Jesus Christ, God’s Son, you find the most amazing things: unmerited forgiveness, fathomless grace, perfect love, and eternal life. Just think about those for a minute.
Unmerited forgiveness? Yep. You see, the first part of Romans 6:23 says, “The wages of sin is death.” Wages are what we earn, what we deserve. Way back in the Garden of Eden, God told Adam & Eve that if they disobeyed Him (that’s all sin is, disobeying God), the result (the wage) would be death. From then until now, the pattern has been the same: people live, people sin, people die. But, God offers to forgive our sins and give us eternal life through His Son.
Fathomless grace? Uh-huh. Grace is being given something we don’t deserve. None of us deserves eternal life. Because even if we’re the best of the best, and we never in our whole lives lie or steal or cheat or kill, we all get frustrated, angry, impatient, and selfish. All of which is sin, all of which earns us . . . death. But God, in His grace, doesn’t require us to deserve eternal life. It’s a gift.
Perfect love? Absolutely. Jesus Christ was and still is the embodiment of God’s love for us. He loves us completely and unconditionally. In fact, He loves us so much that he paid our penalty for us. Remember that wage we earned? Death? He died in our place. And then He did something we could never have done. He defeated death and came alive again so that we could be with Him forever. That’s how much He loves us.
Eternal life? You got it. That is, you can have it. The thing about a gift is that you have to accept it. God doesn’t force His affections on us. We can reject Him and His gift if we want to. If we insist, He’ll let us pay our own way. But that would be tragic. Because the price has already been paid! And in its place is the greatest gift imaginable: Jesus.
Forgiveness, Grace, Love, and Life all wrapped up in the package of Jesus.
Take and unwrap your gift! Learn more about who Jesus is. The Gospel of John is a great place to start. Read it, and know that nothing you’ve done is too big for the grace of God to cover. Nothing. He loves you! He offers forgiveness to you. He wants you with Him forever. The more you learn about Jesus, the more in awe of Him you will be. He is Forgiveness. He is Grace. He is Love. He is Life. He is Everything. And He is Yours if you’ll have Him.
