FINDING TIME TO REST

“If you are tired from carrying heavy burdens, come to me and I will give you rest.” – Matthew 11:28 (CEV)

Texts, e-mails, and message alerts pinging our smartphones like chirping birds reminding you of deadlines and appointments. They shoot at you at the speed of light.

Technology was supposed to simplify your life. And yes, especially in these odd times, it has been a lifesaver for many. but do you ever feel like all technology does is stress you out?

The more things change, the more they stay the same. Nearly 2,000 years have passed since the time of Jesus. In a time when most people farmed small plots of land — lived in stone-and-mud huts — read by candlelight — traveled by donkey, or on foot, He promised the weary people rest. The struggles they faced are still faced by many today. Like scratching out a living, safely raising a family, or living peacefully when extended family keeps sticking their noses into your business.

Life is a challenge. It always has been and always will be. This is why Jesus told the crowds to give their burdens to Him — to learn from His life. Jesus taught people the best way to live: by loving and serving others. He taught them to care more about helping others, and to not place a premium on themselves or their things.

But Jesus’ most valuable example? Spending time each day in conversation with His Father. He needed times of solitude and reflection. Not just to talk, but to listen. With crowds constantly following Him around, He got worn down too. Jesus always made time to rest and talk with me.

Are you feeling tired and empty, especially during these uncertain times? Drained by the demands of your day? I know that finding time for rest may seem impossible. When you need a break from the pressure, remember Me. No matter what day it is, how early or how late, I am waiting to hear from you. I will not turn a deaf ear to your complaints, frustrations or grievances. Just take a moment to whisper a prayer. I will hear you and I will give you rest.

NEXT STEPS:

  • Read John 4:15-25.

  • How does the experience of the woman mirror life today? If you were in her place and needed to confide in Jesus about the pressures you face, what would you say? How could telling Him that right now help you find rest? Try it.
